The goal of the Cultural Responsiveness Task Force is to provide advice on:

  • The development and execution of the BUILD cultural responsiveness survey and the cultural responsiveness components of the survey of graduate school alumni seeking a Ph.D. in the life sciences.
  • The development and implementation of programs to better understand and enhance cultural responsiveness on campus.

Former XULA biology professor, Dr. Mack Crayton, discusses his experiences as a STEM student at a predominately White institution (PWI). The many experiences, from his undergraduate courses through his doctoral studies, led him to realize that, for underrepresented STEM students, effective mentors need to consider non-cognitive factors, such as implicit bias and stereotype threat, that influence their academic persistence.
